The former Hackney Arts Centre has also revealed its autumn programme, hosting Mulatu Astake, Leon Vynehall and more.
The team behind Shoreditch venue Village Underground wants to turn the basement of the old art deco cinema into an education centre in partnership with Community Music. EartH Studios would offer apprenticeship schemes for aspiring technicians and managers, performance opportunities and free rehearsal space for local musicians and bands. As part of the venue's community focus, it will also donate free tickets for events to community members.
After getting Hackney Council's approval in July 2017, Village Underground announced the space's second life and new name last month. Since, they've shared their autumn schedule, which features a mix of parties, concerts, talks and readings: Mulatu Astake performs this Sunday, September 16th; on September 21st, Worldwide FM hosts their second birthday party; George Fitzgerald plays for two nights in late October; Leon Vynehall's Nothing Is Still album tour arrives on November 8th; and Erol Alkan plays all night long on November 10th.
