  • Juan Atkins' foundational electro project Cybotron will perform live for the first time next year. The Cybotron Live tour will launch on April 12th at the Barbican in London, with other gigs set for Berlin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, New York City, Tokyo, Sydney and more, plus festival dates, between 2019 and 2021. (Exact details are TBA.) The performance from Atkins will feature both classic Cybotron material as well as new music from an upcoming Cybotron release—the first since 1995, and the first featuring Atkins since the mid-'80s. The performances will have an audiovisual bent, with layers "of audio to be fed in real time into a bespoke visual generative engine taking 'The Cybotron Principle'—that a computer can be a... better musical collaborator than a person—to the next level," the press release says. Cybotron debuted in 1981 as a group that also featured Richard Davis, who took the project into the '90s with a couple of solo albums. The band's early songs, such as "Alleys Of Your Mind" and "Cosmic Cars," are considered classics of—and forebears to—Detroit techno and electro. See a preview of the live show and listen to "Cosmic Cars" below.
