  • A new monthly event series called Riding The Blinds will kick off in Newcastle, NSW this weekend. The shows will take place at The Station, a disused train station restored and reappropriated as a new arts and culture space for the coastal city. Each event will see one emerging local act paired up with a complementary act from Sydney, with Newcastle's Impatiens—the experimental synth pop project from producer Amelia Bessany—being billed alongside '80s-influenced Sydney duo LA Suffocated on January 20th. Promoter Cooper Bowman, the Novocastrian artist also behind Obsidian Festival and experimental cassette label Altered States Tapes, explains that "it is important to try to make things happen outside of the main metropolitan hubs in Australia if given the chance." The series will seek to "encourage a dialogue between young producers and sound artists from Newcastle," he says, "allowing them to tour and, similarly, to encourage artists from Sydney (and elsewhere) to play in Newcastle. We hope to contribute to Newcastle continuing to produce (and retain) its musical talent and to make it a viable place for more marginalised cultural activities generally." Each event of the series will be free, with future Sydney bookings including Lucy Cliche, Low Flung, Rebel Yell and WRX. Take a look at some photos of the site.
