  • A new iOS app called Disco FM has been released. Described as the "must-have app for all the crate diggers and vinyl record collectors," Disco FM is designed to provide streamlined access to audio previews of vinyl records. After providing a picture of a given record's barcode, or entering its name or catalogue number, the app presents a full tracklist with audio clips for each track. Disco FM purports to use a proprietary algorithm to find tracks listed on YouTube and iTunes, with a match rate of "around 90 percent." Despite drawing info from Discogs' user-generated database, the aim is to "fill the gap" in the vinyl marketplace's current mobile offering, which only includes YouTube videos of a track if uploaded by a user of the site. (While most records listed on Discogs come with YouTube videos, many obscure releases do not feature audio, although this is often because they have not been uploaded to YouTube or any streaming platforms.) Unlike Discogs, Disco FM does not let you buy and sell records, focussing purely on providing audio clips for crate digging situations where no listening station is available. You can try it out for 99 cents via the App Store. Watch a promo video for Disco FM.
