  • Liz Harris, AKA Grouper, has released an experimental album under the name Nivhek. After Its Own Death / Walking In A Spiral Towards The House is described as "opaque assemblages of Mellotron, guitar, field recordings, tapes, and broken FX pedals" in the label text. The double album combines recordings made during and after two residences in Portugal and Russia with pieces Harris made at home in Astoria, Oregon. The two parts, which total about an hour, use Harris's collaboration with the late filmmaker Paul Clipson, Hypnosis Display, as a "compositional reference point." Harris describes the ambient pieces as "a requiem, a ritual, to unlock and release feelings… a toxic concentrated reduction of something much darker bubbling beneath." The record is out in a limited edition via Harris's Yellow Electric. Each piece will take up one LP—a more detailed breakdown of each part is available on Harris's Bandcamp. Last year, Grouper released Grid Of Points. The brief LP, also recorded at an artist residency, landed on our best albums list for 2018.
