  • RVNG Intl. has lined up the next entry in its collaborative FRKWYS series. Spencer Doran and Ryan Carlile, AKA Visible Cloaks, have teamed up with Yoshio Ojima and Satsuki Shibano for serenitatem, coming this April. The nine-track LP was recorded in Tokyo in December 2017 during a weeklong exploratory session that involved multiple "creative strategies," according to the label—one being "echoing sound together," Ojima says. Leading up to their time in the studio together, the four artists passed "sound sketches" back and forth, throughout Visible Cloaks' first Japanese tour. "The aim was to make a work that was not specifically ambient (or environmental)," Doran says, "but something more multi-hued, weaving these deconstructive concepts into an album that has a deeper architecture underpinning it." Yoshio Ojima is an ambient and environmental composer, who credits partnering with pianist Satsuki Shibano as key to realising his "fullest potential" as a composer. They've come to be known as "trailblazers" of the '80s and '90s Japanese avant-garde music and arts scenes. Doran previously linked up with Ojima when he complied the Kankyo Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990 LP for Light In The Attic's Japan Archival Series. Visible Cloaks' most recent release on the New York label is 2017's Lex, while RVNG's last FRKWYS entry, Nue, was handled by drone artist Tashi Wada, his father Yoshi Wada and a handful of collaborators, including Julia Holter, Cole MGN and Corey Fogel.
