Ableton is releasing a suite of plug-ins that let you to control your modular with Live 10.
By sending and receiving control voltage signals, CV Tools' ten plug-ins build a bridge between your computer and modular system. Much like Expert Sleepers' Silent Way plug-ins, CV Tools can send clocks, triggers, envelopes, LFOs and various modulation signals from Live to a modular—but also in the other direction. The CV Utility plug-in, for instance, lets the modular automate parameters within Live, and CV Clock In gives your modular control over Live's tempo. The CV Instrument device lets you control your modular like any other Ableton MIDI instrument, using clips and automation to send pitch, rhythm and modulation information to a set of modules.
In a nod to the strengths of modular workflow, CV Tools also gives you the ability to route and combine modulation signals together into complex shapes, while the Rotating Rhythm Generator takes ideas like clock dividing and logic operations to generate evolving polyrhythmic patterns.
A crucial prerequisite for using CV Tools is owning a DC-coupled audio interface such as Expert Sleepers' ES-8, RME's Babyface, UAD's Apollo series, the MOTU Ultralite and others.
CV Tools is currently open for testing via Ableton's beta-testing program. It's free for all users of Live 10 Suite, while Live 10 Standard owners will need Max For Live. CV Tools was created in collaboration with Skinnerbox.
