Stardust's Music Sounds Better With You will be reissued on Because Music June 28th.
The single was originally released on Daft Punk cofounder Thomas Bangalter's legendary Roulé imprint in 1998, and was one of the biggest tracks to emerge from the meteoric French touch scene.
The press release sketches out the track's genesis. After meeting at a house party in the mid-'90s, Alan Braxe and Bangalter "formed a creative partnership" that resulted in Braxe's first single, Vertigo, being released on Roulé. Shortly thereafter, Bangalter joined Braxe on keyboards at a live gig at Rex Club in Paris, along with Benjamin Diamond on vocals.
"The trio opted to compose something new for the occasion," the press release reads, "structured around a short, funky loop sampled from Chaka Khan's 1981 R&B hit 'Fate'." They'd spend a week in the studio afterwards, completing a studio version of "Music Sounds Better With You" using the "the most rudimentary elements of electronic music technology: an old disco record, two samplers—an E-mu SP-1200 and an Ensoniq ASR-10—and a MIDI sequence saved to a blue floppy disk."
The July 1998 release was immediately a hit in the clubs, and was eventually licensed to Virgin Records, who commissioned a video from Michel Gondry. It would go on to sell a million copies.
Stardust would never release another track, though they were "offered outrageous sums of money to produce a full-length album."
