  • Submissions have opened for the NSW Government's inquiry into the Sydney lockout laws. Last month, State Premier Gladys Berejiklian's announced that a committee would be assembled to "take stock" of the controversial licensing restrictions. Now, the makeup of the Joint Select Committee on Sydney's nighttime economy has been confirmed, and community submissions are being received. Comprising the committee are four Liberal National Coalition members, two Labor members, Mark Latham of Pauline Hanson's One Nation party and Cate Faehrmann of the Greens, with Liberal MP Natalie Ward as Chair and the independent Member for Sydney Alex Greenwich as Deputy Chair. Ward explained in a media release: "The Committee has been set up to look at issues affecting Sydney's nighttime economy. This includes community health and safety, but also ways to ensure that Sydney remains an attractive place to visit with plenty of options for people to enjoy the city after hours." She goes on to say, "We will be looking at the effect of the lockout laws on businesses in Sydney. We also want to hear people's experiences, either visiting these places for entertainment or those on the front lines, dealing with health and safety problems. We know there are strong feelings on both sides of this debate, and we are hoping to hear from as many people and organisations as possible." Any member of the public is welcome to make a submission to the inquiry via the NSW Parliament website until July 2nd. The committee will report its findings on September 30th.
