  • Iranian composer Siavash Amini will release his next record, Serus, on Melbourne's Room40 in August. The EP is "an ode to night, literal and metaphorical" and incorporates textural electronics and post-classical arrangements. Serus was inspired by philosopher Maurice Blanchot's concept of "other night," which Amini reflected upon during a nervous breakdown after "many nights of not sleeping and intoxication." "My mind had experienced a blurring of what one might call the 'other night' and the night itself, by being in half sleep most of the time," said Amini. "I can only describe this as being distant or, more precisely, being in the dark. It was as if my body was resisting sleep and my sleepy mind was resisting being awake, only to dream of another type of the world that I could be awake in." Nima Aghiani and Pouya Pour-Amin also contributed to the EP, on violin and electric double bass respectively. Serus will be Amini's third project released this year, after Harmistice, a collaboration with 9T Antiope (the duo of Aghiani and Sara Bigdeli Shamloo) for Hallow Ground, and Second Shift, a collaboration with Matt Finney for Opal Tapes. Last December, Amini was featured in our feature on the experimental electronic music scene in Iran. Listen to "A Recollection Of The Disappeared."
