London producer Loraine James has announced her next album, For You And I, set to be released on Hyperdub this fall.
Musically, For You And I "feels like a live jam session with a jazz mentality, contrasting the delicate and abrasive," according to the label, and features vocals from James' frequent collaborator, London rapper Le3 BLACK, as well as UK singer Theo and James' girlfriend. The record is influenced by James' experience listening to jazz, electronica, UK drill and grime, as well as growing up in Enfield, London. The album art, which features James holding a photo of her estate from ten years ago, is a tribute to her upbringing there.
"I started making music in those flats, news of my dad and uncle passing away happened in that flat, I came out to my mum crying in that flat," James said. "Most of my life has been there and in so many years time this area will no longer exist."
Parts of For You And I also explore the complexities and ups and downs of being in a queer relationship in London. "I'm in love and wanted to share that in some way," the artist elaborated. "I wanted to make songs that reflect layers of my relationship. This album is more about feeling than about using certain production skills."
The LP follows her debut album from 2017, Detail, as well as a handful of EPs and singles, the most recent being +44 - Thinking - Of - You - REMIXES, which featured remixes from BFTT and Drvg Cvltvre among others.
