Oneohtrix Point Never has explained how he composed the score to Josh and Benny Safdie's Uncut Gems in a new documentary for Moog.
Daniel Lopatin, who also scored the Safdie brothers' 2017 movie Good Time, describes nailing down the essence of one of 2019's most-lauded films by finding the right Moog synth patches and through the tense process of composing on a tight deadline.
"That's part of the spirit of the movie," he says in the documentary alongside Josh Safdie. "[Adam Sandler's character] Howard Ratner is up against the clock, and there's not a lot of time to figure out a whole lot of problems, and that essentially was mirrored in the studio. That kind of thing, it's weird, but it does make its way into the music."
"You have to be so shameless," Lopatin says about how the three artists worked together in the studio. "Unabashed, childlike studio tomfoolery is the only way to really get to this magical level."
The 17-track Uncut Gems score is out now on Warp Records.
