- RA takes a look at the sights, sounds and methods of Richie Hawtin's DE9: Transitions, and then goes beyond the technology to examine the mix itself.
A full four years after the technologically groundbreaking DE9: Closer to the Edit, Richie Hawtin has finally brought us the third release in his DE9 mix series: "DE9: Transitions".
Pushing new technology as far as it can go, Hawtin uses tools such as Ableton Live to mix elements of different tracks together in order to create something entirely new, while at the same time questioning the role of the DJ and the very nature of mix CDs themselves. Released on DVD in 5.1 surround sound and clocking in at 96 minutes, with a bonus CD containing a 75-minute stereo mix, Transitions is quite a package.
To accompany the release, which is undoubtedly the biggest release in dance music this week, RA will be publishing a two-part interview with the man himself, entitled "Richie Hawtin's Transitions".
In Part 1, which will be live on RA on Tuesday November 1st (tomorrow), we talk to Richie Hawtin about "DE9: Transitions" and the philosophy behind it, transitions between DJing and producing, and transitions in his own life.
In Part 2, which was conducted 24 hours after the results of the DJ mags poll were announced, Hawtin talks about his No.12 ranking, the current transitional nature of minimal techno, the new breed of minimal artists, future plans for M_nus, and the importance of pushing forward. This part of the interview will be available on RA on Thursday November 3rd.
