The storied label will begin "using instruments to reach a higher level of consciousness."
The album, called Ambrosia, is the first record in what Axis calls its "new era," originally announced back in May when Jeff Mills said the label would broaden to jazz, classical and film soundtrack music.
In a note accompanying Ambrosia, Mills further outlines his vision:
I figured that all the music lovers of past eras will grow older, move away from the physical response of dancing to music because the rest of their lives would need more attention, more time and management. However, the affection and love that once carried them throughout the long nights on the dance floors would not only maintain, but that relationship might actually grow more intense as time marches on and the asset of fond memories of our pasts would cherish and valued even more. Considering this type of music lover, I looked to electronic music to examine if the genre had produced enough non-danceable material that might accommodate such a person. He goes on to say that he was inspired by dance music producers who incorporate elements of jazz into their productions, and thought that Byron The Aquarius would be a natural inclusion for the series.
Byron, Mills and engineer Steve Kovacs recorded most of Ambrosia in two days in Georgia at the beginning of 2020, and then after the pandemic hit the three of them finished it using a "web-based audio sharing app."
Mills describes the LP as a "mix between soulful house and jazz music with a touch of blues." Musicians featured on the album include drummer "Lil John" Roberts, trumpeter Dashill Smith, flautist Rasheeda Ali, guitarist Sheldon Ferguson and bass player Chocolat Costa. It's out on October 16th.
