  • The first of Ireland's new music festivals this summer avoids well-trodden indie-meets-dance turf with a classy lineup that leans heavily on the soulful side of electronic music. The successful Electric Picnic raised the bar for Irish music festivals back in 2004 and since then there has been a noticeable shift towards quality, well-organised outdoor electronic events. The latest addition to the country's festival schedule is The Garden Party, organised by POD and Bodytonic, which looks bound to wake up the sleepy locals in Meath County and give them a good shake. The location is a breathtaking one: in the walled gardens of the eighteenth century Ballinlough Castle overlooking two lakes. The Garden Party will also differ from past rave-ups like Global Gathering, Creamfields and Homelands by catering to music lovers of reggae, dub, disco and experimental electronics. The Main Stage lineup juxtaposes the electro hip-hop of Spank Rock with Jamaician veterans Toots & the Maytals, a tight live act by all accounts. The currently on-point electrohouse of Booka Shade and Ewan Pearson will get party guests hopping in the POGO Tent alongside rejuvenated Kompakt granddaddies The Orb. Perhaps the strongest draw though is Detroit techno deity and remixer-du-jour Carl Craig, who will be joined by soul house hero Tony Humphries, Alexander Robotnick, Scratch Perverts and DJ Marky in the Green House. Tastier than your aunt's tomatoes. Other perks on offer to revelers include culinary delights, side shows, cocktail bars and a bona fide flea circus. And if for some strange reason it all proves to be too much, you can be nursed back to health with a holistic massage. How very civilised! A theatre group will also perform the Rocky Horror Picture Show in The Garden Tent should punters feel the need to timewarp. The Garden Party takes place at Ballinlough Castle in Meath County, Ireland on Sunday, June 4, 2006.
