  • ‘Window Smasher’ by Daniel Stefanik is the first release on Cargo Edition, a new sub-label of Leipzig-based Moon Harbour Recordings. RA chats to label head Matthias Tanzmann about the birth of his baby. Matthias Tanzmann founded Moon Harbour Recordings in 2001. Originally releasing deep house, in 2005 the sound of the label moved towards minimal under the influence of producer Daniel Stefanik on 12”s such as ‘Move Me’ and ‘Bad Ass Mixes’. Now that Stefanik has shifted over to Cargo Edition, will Moon Harbour move back to deep house? RA posed the question to Matthias Tanzmann at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona.
“We’ll see where it goes. We basically want to release music we like but I think it will all be related to house in a way.”
What’s the rationale behind Cargo Edition? Is the sound different from Moon Harbour?
“Cargo Edition is intended to be Daniel's playground!”
So minimal techno then. And true to form, debut release ‘Window Smasher’ features a remix by Mathias Kaden [Vakant] whose stripped back style of minimal could be a template for the genre. Daniel Stefanik has a background in dub techno and experimental electronics (his early work is available free on netlabel Instabil). In 2005 Stefanik moved to vinyl with releases on Mobilee and Moon Harbour. ‘Deviant Behaviour’ in particular became a club favorite, finding its way into the bags of DJ Koze, Luciano and onto André Galluzzi’s ‘Berghain 01’ mix CD. Those going to the Love Parade in Berlin this year can check out the Moon Harbour stable at their stage on July 15. Spinning will be Matthias Tanzmann, Luna City Express, Daniel Stefanik and Marlow. Here's a taste of what’ll be on Tanzmann's turntables. Matthias Tanzmann House Top 5 1. Audio Werner - Onandon [Perlon] 2. Leif & Tom Ellis - High Mileage [Moon Harbour] 3. Fuckpony - Ride the Pony [Get Physical] 4. Cassy - Alexandra/Toyah [Cassy] 5. Shed - Well Done [Soloaction] Daniel Stefanik’s ‘Window Smasher’ EP on Cargo Edition is out now.
