Nashville country meets house music? Ewan Pearson remixing indie star Cortney Tidwell might just be 2007’s most unlikely pairing. ‘Don’t Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up’ will be released in March.
Cortney Tidwell’s roots-inflected "gothic country" picked up many fans in 2006, including it seems one house music producer in Ewan Pearson. Growing up on a diet of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, and with a mother and grandfather regulars at The Grand Ole Opry, Tidwell would seem an unlikely club music star, but the Pearson’s rejig of the title track from Tidwell’s latest mini-album is making Nashville make sense in the clubs. Produced with Pearson’s usual finesse and featuring the voice of Tidwell, which has been described as reminiscent of Bjork, The Sundays or Liz Fraser, the twelve-minute ‘Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up’ is already getting spins from the likes of Tiefschwarz and Ben Watt.
RA asked Tidwell what she thought of the club version of her track: “I think Ewan did an amazing job. The first time I heard it, Ewan and I had gone out for a drink and he handed me the CD. I slipped outside the tiny bar in Berlin – I had headphones on – and I couldn’t help but tear down the street in a mad fashion dancing about.” So are you a big clubgoer yourself? “Hell, yes,” Tidwell smiles. “I take control of the dance floor. People leave with blurred vision because I’m so fresh.”
Cortney Tidwell’s ‘Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up’ (Ewan Pearson Remix) will be released on Ever Records in March 2007.
