  • Kraftwerk founder Florian Schneider has been notably absent on the opening dates of the band’s current US tour. There’s no explanation from Düsseldorf for the no show, and not likely to be one, but fans looking forward to Coachella will have to make do with an appearance by Ralf Hutter, Henning Schmitz, Fritz Hilpert and Stefan Pfaff, only one of which is an original member of the band. Speculation is rife about Schneider's reason for skipping the tour, but the man himself has a history of skiving off when it comes to hitting the road. “He is a sound perfectionist, so, if the sound isn’t up to a certain standard, he doesn’t want to do it,” Hutter told Mojo magazine in 2005. Disappointed fans might console themselves with the fact that actual human beings will be appear at Coachella during Kraftwerk’s set, Schneider’s absence notwithstanding. In 1981 the band themselves played promo gigs in Paris and New York without even stepping onstage – instead their famous robots performed the music.
