Aaron Coultate meets a dance music chameleon.
For more than 20 years, Roman Flügel has reinvented himself. He emerged as part of the fertile Frankfurt scene in the '90s that spawned three much-loved labels: Playhouse, Klang and Ongaku Music. He's worked under a string of solo aliases that have taken him from jacking house and electro to experimental and ambient. He formed the duo Alter Ego with Jorn Elling Wittke, and the success of that partnership brought its own rewards and challenges. The past few years have ushered in a new era for Flügel. In 2011 he put out Fatty Folders, his first solo album under his given name, and it's regarded by many as his most accomplished work to date. When Aaron Coultate caught up with Flügel at this year's Nuits Sonores festival in Lyon, they started their discussion by talking about his next album, which is coming out via Dial in September.
