It's not easy throwing techno parties in Denver, Colorado. Just ask John Templeton, the DJ and producer who runs the Great American Techno Festival. Nothing about his job is easy—from liquor laws to closing times to a perpetual lack of funds, every aspect of his event is an uphill battle. But like so many promoters living far from techno's established circuit, Templeton doesn't have much of a choice—if he wants to hear artists like Jeff Mills or Mike Parker in his home town, he'll just have to book them himself. So he does. Last month, Templeton made his annual "winter pilgrimage" across Europe. We caught up with him in Berlin to discuss his life as an underdog promoter
