Big breaks and booming beats.
Ilian Tape's brand of techno has never been straightforward. Dense and rhythmically complex, it takes in the dubby loops of the label's early catalogue to the high-impact bombs of recent years. The productions and DJ sets of Dario and Marco Zenker, the label's founders, operate in similar terrain. As Zenker Brothers, the pair have released an album and a string of killer 12-inches, all of which feature heavy atmospheres and crafty percussion. These releases, plus solid skills behind the decks, have earned Dario and Marco a dedicated following—they're among the best-loved house and techno artists operating today.
Dario and Marco are in the midst of an extensive tour celebrating Ilian Tape's tenth anniversary. (They also toasted the milestone with a hefty compilation called A Decade Ilian Tape.) On the morning after an Ilian Tape takeover at Berghain, Dario and Marco visited RA's Berlin office for a chat with Matt Unicomb, reflecting on working as a duo, longevity and their vision for their label.
