INDEX:Records was realised in Amsterdam in 2016 by two friends, King Softy and Madame Zhou, who originally hail from opposite ends of the globe, but became magnetised by a musical connection. The duo’s shared recognition that many talented producers within their networks, often emerging artists, had no outlet for their music, prompted the conception of the label: a communal space for a diverse set of creators to release their music.
INDEX:Records focuses on creating authentic dance music, without the constraint of rigid genre classification. The label is now predominantly based in Berlin, but has strong connections to Manchester, the wider UK, and New Zealand.
Permeating the scene in 2017 with the debut EP ‘INDEX: Volume 1’, the label swiftly followed up with pensive house EP ‘Comfort Pose’, by INDEX: stalwart, Ike Zwanikken. The title track also attracted a remix from rising stars YS, who have recently released their widely praised debut EP ‘Music Angel’.
The label garnered further interest from atmospheric soundscape technician Vase, affiliate of Saplings Records and A R T S Berlin. This connection brought about the acclaimed sci-fi release, Dorsal EP in 2018, as well as their collaboration in 2019 with Opal Tapes, titled ‘Amos’ Flat’; an odyssey of sonic manoeuvres through ambient, bass and IDM.
INDEX:Records has also nurtured a luminous connection with producers from the New Zealand underground: from the sold out ghetto-electro record by Mr. Worldwide, to the industrial experimentalism of Black Snake Whip, the label champions recognition for the heroes of the isolated archipelago. With ‘NZ Electro 2020’, INDEX:Records collaborates with Fray Mysterio to bring to the fore one of the genre mutations caused by this unique environment, hoping to expose the people pushing dance music deep in the Pacific. Featuring a track from DJ Stingray favourite Go Nuclear, as well as bumping club tracks from Holk Hogon, Fray Mysterio, DJ PG/VG, Amamelia and Wormfarm.
