REALMZ - Articulated Oblivion

  • He's been a fixture on Sonic Groove for more than half a decade, and now REALMZ, otherwise known as Pittsburgh producer Rob D'Atri, has started his own label, INTERNAL REALMZ. Articulated Oblivion is its debut record. Given D'Atri's brooding and multifaceted style, it should be no surprise that there's something on it for just about any fan of dark techno. "Roaming The Mental Plane," with its subdued drum volleys and slow synth throbs, is a craftily understated opener. "Chasms" and "Trigger" are geared towards sweatier dance floor moments. "Trigger," the most upfront and aggressive thing here, works over the mid-range with a harsh metallic riff, while "Chasms" features plenty of ghoulish drones and bursts of coarse percussion, which contrast with some curiously clean-sounding woodblocks and bleeps higher up in the mix. D'Atri drops down to 90 BPM on "Timeless Halls," an easy-going conclusion that's heavy on low-slung drums and stuttered, vaguely anthemic synths.
