Teengirl Fantasy - Nun

  • After the fuzzy, blissed-out pop of their 2010 debut LP 7am, and the under-cooked hotchpotch of ideas that was their 2012 follow-up Tracer, this release finds Logan Takahashi and Nicholas Weiss once again striking out in multiple directions, with more convincing results than on their last record. Notably absent are the high-profile guest vocalists that propped up Tracer—this release is instrumental-only. "Nun" is a luxuriant and dramatic piece of floor-friendly electronica, its celestial pads and waves of thunderstorm percussion giving an epic feel that belies its four-minute duration. "Eric" achieves a similarly illuminate quality, this time through a scattering of twinkling keys laid across drum & bass/footwork-inspired percussion. Two short, experimental cuts round out the package."Platinum" hits on romantic interlude territory, all yearning pads and gently crashing percussion; "Nun Beat" takes a section of "Nun" and slows it into a balmy, tranquilised haze. There's nothing as arresting as 2010's breakout "Cheaters" single here, but neither are there any of Tracer's bewildering moments. On this evidence, the pair's spring-scheduled third LP will be an interesting if characteristically scattershot listen.
