Terekke - LIES-BLK 07

  • Terekke once explained his production approach this way: "You just kinda fuck with the drum machine, load in some samples, turn on the tape recorder and just go for it." This makes sense given the sound of his music—the Berlin-based New Yorker's three records so far have been simple, raw and seemingly improvised. But more importantly, all of them have a kind of organic personality—soul, even—that you imagine might have been stifled by a more calculated production method. The latest, LIES-BLK 07, is some of his richest music yet. The first time I heard the A1, someone wandered into the room and said, "I think your alarm is going off." In fact, that was the hi-hat, which does sound a bit like the buzz of an alarm clock. The track overall is a thudding dub-house bomb, for sure Terekke's fattest production yet, but delivered in a kind of swirling, fever-dream haze. For me the A2 is the pick of the litter—grainy, sonorous and dotted with jazzy organ licks, it has a soothing, rain-on-the-windows atmosphere. The B-side is more subdued: a drifting ambient piece evokes a feeling of contented exhaustion, and a deeply submerged techno track strikes the record's coldest note. As subtle as it is, it's got a lot of heart, and you'll come back to it again and again.
