D.K. - Love On Delivery

  • Nestled in among the seven records released by Antinote in 2014 was D.K.'s Drop, the first album from both the label and the producer. The LP was an exercise in soothing synth-house, evoking swaying hammocks and cloudless skies. But the record's most captivating moments came when the Parisian deviated from the four-to-the-floor framework, and it's this more expressive side that he explores on Love On Delivery. There's a pristine, Balearic feel to the four cuts—it's easy to imagine them soundtracking a sunset. With its warm, glossy funk and perfectly weighted percussion, opener "Licence To Dream" should win you over within its first two bars, and it seals the deal with a jolly xylophone melody. "Marimba Theme" is more downtempo, and is the EP's only blue moment. Doleful sirens and sweeping pads play off against rosy ripples, all set to a syrupy 100 BPM pulse. "What Ever Turns You On," with its funk bassline, is bright and upbeat, but it plays it a little too safe and ends up sounding plain by comparison. There's a similarly blissful atmosphere on "Softest Place," but this time the summery flourishes gel in balmy harmony. Too much of a sweet thing can soon turn sickly, but in measured doses this is dance music at its easiest on the ears.
