Matt Karmil - Dans-Maxi Från Nacksving

  • Given the strength of Matt Karmil's connections with Studio Barnhus—he lived in Stockholm for a spell, got to know the three label founders there and was the only remixer on Talaboman's debut single—it's surprising this is his first release for them. On Dans-Maxi Från Nacksving, the Cologne-based Englishman's love of sounding like a broken record (in the best possible way) is again at the fore. The stuck-groove looping that made "So You Say (Dirty Tape Heads Mix)" and "I Freeze" particularly great is at work here in the jaunty, guitar-sampling "Doom." The care Karmil takes in selecting his source material has been noted before. "Moment" is a gently building treat that uses little more than a bassline, a steady kick and a few heavily filtered seconds of Fleetwood Mac's "Little Lies." A three-and-a-half-minute whirr of machine sighs, opener "Death" is very much an extended intro, with the odd synth flash occasionally zig-zagging across the darkness. "Sex Life +" is a deep, reverberating curio. Its howls and stutters make for one of the most experimental Karmil tracks so far.
