We Love Sundays at Space in Ibiza

  • A promoter's rundown of the the winner of the worlds 'Best Clubnight' Award in the recent DanceStar 2002 Awards, We Love Space in IBIZA. Well into our second week of party's now, after our amazing opening party of 'We-love sundays at space'. For the opening party we had Morillo, smoking Jo and Morales on the terrace and our very own jules Beamont, Sasha and James Zabelia inside. Although the island was noticeably quiet, a great mixture of spanish, greek, italian and english people all came out of the woodwork for clearly the best party on the island. The longest party on the island (22 hours) and the best venue for daytime clubbing. WEEK 1 - The opening After an average set by David morales i was left wondering how the hell did this guy even get famous, sure a few remixes one cheezy anthem, but really he it a terrible dj. I reacall last year he played the terrace, and was diobolical, dead silences throughout his set. I came very close to abusing him. I feel that as clubbers we have the right to tell a dj that they are shit, the punters pay good money, ther djs need to know what do to do, simple. Jules played an average set inside, having to change his usual style quite a bit, making it darker and a bit harder and far from that fanny groove thats really made him. Im sure he'll do much better on the terrace (and he did!!). But the great story of the opening party was Sasha and James Zabelia. James Djing career has exploded in the last, pretty much since the last time he played at space last summer. Being taken under Sashas wing and signed to excession, at 20 years old!! After his set you can really see such potential is this young prodigy, mixing up breaks and prog seamlessly. Even adding some superb scratching on top. Enter Sasha, when you think of the heavyweights, the dons of prog you really cant go past, those two names 'Sasha & Digweed'. Sasha just seems so enigmatic, as he reaches out to the crowd, clearly loving Space. He played a great set, it wasnt his best set but still very good. Now at about 5am i was sitting on the terrace chillin when Sasha walks up to me with a drink, 'shouldnt you be working?' i say, but apparently James has agreed to play the last hour. So after a while of drinking and hanging about with everyone on the terrace, Sashas ears perk up, 'hes playing my tune' he yells to everyone. James, at 5.55am had dropped Sasha's new tune, so a parade of bosses and promoters all gathered with Sasha infront of the dj booth. I dont know about the others but this was the first time i'd heard his new tune on a big system, and you really need to hear it loud before making judgment. Its an amazing light, off beat breakbeat track (with a similar timing beat to idiotec by radiohead), with lots of kinda atmospheric sounds, very smooth with beautiful break downs. After all going nuts on the dance floor watching Sasha jumping about, James droped a wicked bootleg of xpander with the cowgirl vocal over the top, cue, hands in the air. Viva Space! WEEK 2 So for our second party we had an even stronger line up with Frankie Knuckles, Layo and Bushwacka, Steve Lawler and Deep Dish, but really these artists were not as comercially know as people like Sasha. Frankie as usual played a superb house set on the terrace in the afternoon, Jules decieded to play some electro funk on the terrace, which i dont think i've heard before, and it went down really well. Layo & bushwackas flight had been delayed by an hour and their 4 hour set from 10-2, was shortened to 2 hours, unforchanant. I actually missed their set but from everyones feed back it wasnt one of their best. Their new album was released today in UK which is getting mostly great reviews (similar to their low life album) Lawler absolutly packed out the terrace, and proved why he's called the king of space, playing the new Underworld tune as one of his last records, another album I cant wait for. But for me the highlight of the night was Deep Dish, I've only heard them a few times before at fabric in london and renaissance in Ibiza. I find that sometimes prog djs get stuck in a rut and they tend to drag on, Deepdish were the opposite, they played nice bass heavy beats, with lots of little melodys and riffs, interesting prog music! They kept the floor packed till 6.30 in the morning, with everyone begging for more. You never really think about it but after meeting all these dj teams like DeepDish, L&B you realise that behind the music the guys must have a very strong relationship, best mates that travel the world together, it musn't be easy. So now looking forward to next week, we've got Sander, Sasha, And junkie XL (who i'm looking forward to seeing for the first time) as well as the manumission Elvis doing his thing at space. Wink Wink. There doesnt seem to be many big tunes around at the moment the only noticable ones are of course the Tim Deluxe tune and Safe from harm by narcotic thrust. On a personal note the two tunes that i've bought so far are the new cassius tune with Jocelyn Brown, and a tasty little 10" of the new masters at work tune 'backfired' (joey negro mixes) pure MAW soul! almost all the club nights have opened now except Moneypennys and Renaissance both opening this week. This last week the Island is definatly getting bussier, people still think that the world cup is probably the reason for the decrease in people. Finally everything is coming together and the place is starting to come alive number of times swiming: 0 records bought: 2 times lost within DC10: 1 guestlists sorted: ALL
