Heion - Get On

  • Only three releases in, you can already sense Matthew Kyle's In The Woods imprint starting to developing a sound. The records to date―including this one―have been sample-heavy, adhering old loops to new percussion for slo-mo house results. Last time it was an EP from Mexico; this one comes from Romania. The title track seems quite docile at first, its bassline ambling lazily along. The serenade is soon interrupted, however, with a hugely reverbed wailing taking over. It ratchets the mood considerably, Heion using it several more times to shift between tense and calm. "Off" is much more conventional, leading with hip-shaking low-end. Here, the vocals are a sultry female moaning, rather than the noisy masculinity of before. It sounds quite similar to Suzanne Kraft's "Morning Come"; it wouldn't be a surprise if they'd both sampled the same chord hit. "Off" fits two guitar lines into its mid-section, however. The first is a dirty-sounding bass, the second a plucked electric. Shimmying happily alongside one another, they rarely appear apart. "Not Knowing" and "Come Here" are delightfully soft. The former pursues a similar aim to "Off," pairing funk bass with chiming chords and noodling guitar. "Come On," meanwhile, revolves around a tap-tapping keyboard loop, messing with the filters amid wispy disco strings and whispered female vocals.
