Vince Watson - Sequential Vince Watson - Sequential
Vince Watson - Sequential With the third release for 2011 on his own Bio Music, Vince Watson continues what he's been doing since the '90s: Stacking layers of crisp, lush melody upon one another. In the title track, the most crucial of these is a rapid, four note arpeggio. One might call it trancey, but for its constantly-morphing timbre, which Watson frequently augments using the same pattern played a few octaves lower. By the mid-section, three extra melodic sequences join the party. None are particularly easy to describe, but they're all "pretty" and impossibly pure-sounding.

Rolando's remix sounds as if played through a wall; its kick drum is more vibration than noise, and all the melodic elements have been watered down. This only lasts until the halfway mark, however. There, the American picks up the pace considerably, introducing a skipping hi-hat and heavy claps. Even ignoring this, it's far more low-key than Watson's euphoric original. Paul Woolford's effort sports a contemporary sheen not present in the others. It's strung around stomping beats and taut, dub-like synths, but most of it sounds brand new (and a little paint-by-numbers). Though one of the original's pinwheeling melodies has somehow been cleverly pressurised, it's only been used as a breakdown. Alongside Woolford's monochrome bridges, its colourful revolutions are utterly incongruous. It seems likely the juxtaposition was intentional, but in this case, it doesn't quite succeed.
