Jay Haze - From the Vaults

  • Passing judgment on Jay Haze's music seems somewhat churlish when you consider how much time he invests doing charity work in South America. But there's enough on From the Vaults to stave off any uncomfortable conversations. Stomping opener "I Can Love You" is adorned with an intricate, crunching rhythm that's been lashed to a couple of counterpoint vocal samples, squeakily high and gruffly low. Throughout, there's an undertow of distortion that almost sounds like a production fault. "Chamber of Love" could have been made by a different producer altogether. Built around a simple mid-tempo kick and thick layers of doleful synths, it's electronica so spacey you can actually hear the wind whistling through the gaps. To bag "Snoop Hang Low" you'll have to enter your finest online record emporium. Joined by Swiss minimalist Michal Ho, it's a speedy yomp across tribal territories, accompanied by whirring digital beeps and synth stabs. Perhaps buoyed by the presence of house deity Tyree Cooper, the EP closes in memorable fashion with "Third Eyez Open." Revolving around a seemingly endless stream of emotive analogue synth melodies slotted into each other, it's carried on top of a rhythm track with barely-hidden acid tendencies.
