  • The Shindig club in Newcastle is a clubbing institution in the UK with a record of being one of the truest house clubs around with a history harking back to ye olde 1991. The history lesson goes something like this: growing from a small 200 capacity to the current 1350 at Foundation with arguably one of the best sound systems in the country, regular guest appearances from the likes of Danny Rampling, Roger Sanchez, Deep Dish, Eric Morillo, Lottie, Danny Howells and Yousef, and a hungry devoted crowd which files in each week. Shindig Volume 1 is brought to you by the lovable chaps responsible for all those quality tunes and labels nestled in your record box: Lexicon Avenue, Forensic Records, New Phunk Theory, Little Green Men and of course Shindig. So with a history like that you’ve got to expect a pretty special CD right? Queue press release quotes: "It's not about chartbusters or big name DJ's…it's what's happening musically at Shindig as it happens…." Rob Cameron – Promoter Quite. The first CD features tracks from Brent Laurence, Anada Project. Cuba Computers, more Chus & Cellabos and Mooncat than you can shake a stick at, and a ‘special’ Lexicon Avenue rework of Creamer and K’s ‘Wish you were here’. I was left scratching my head at first, wondering if it in fact was 1991 and why my handbag wasn’t closer to my side. That said it’s a nice chunky affair, nodding its head to the bygone era of dark heads down progressive house. I’m going to award tune of CD1 to that little drummer boy – DJ Chus for ‘That Groove Feeling’ (Defected) which is a proper big room tune with bag o bongos. ‘I wish you were here’? Won’t this tune ever go away? Perhaps CD2 should have come before CD1. It starts off with a lovely Ashley Beedle mix of Emulsion ‘ Kinda Blue’ and then swings into Noel Nanton ‘Your Love’ (Ian Pooley mix). Lovely. This CD is definitely living up to beforesaid quote – Future Funk Essentials, Audiowhores, Gene Farris, Simon Grey and Dennis Ferrer all feature here on what can be described as a more laid back house CD. This is true house music? Make tracks to Shindig and check the club because it is a truly awesome night out with Scot Bradford, Scooby and guests. CD2 will be hanging out in my CD changer and I’m more than curious as to what Volume 2 will bring. Hopefully more of that true house vibe which seems a little lacking on this release.
