Pol_On - Open Your Arms

  • Returning to Freerange with their second EP for the label, Poland's Pol_On continue to sound right at home on Jimpster's imprint. They've got the jacking house rhythms, the techno-jazz synthesizers and most of all the swirling, starry-eyed sensibility that's a hallmark of Freerange's releases. "Open Your Arms" doesn't have to plead too hard; every element conspires to pull you into its embrace. The drums strike the perfect balance between disco-loose and machine-grooved, with a frequency range that makes them feel especially present in the mix. Augmented chords and silky synth bass strike a position somewhere between Metro Area and Recloose, and they top it all off with just enough vocals to add that extra "human" touch. What it lacks in innovation is more than compensated for by deft execution: I never get tired of the way their handclaps cut through gated chords in the breakdown. "Dreamin About You" is much heavier, with a dirty, crumpled kick drum underneath hissing hi-hats and sampled horns, all swelling into an approximation of Pepe Bradock's tough-but-supple style. Fred P's reshape of "Open Your Arms" dials down the hi-hats and lets the congas do the work, reducing the original's chords to their wispy essence.
