- Anyone who has had even a passing interest in deep house over the past 15 years can't have failed to notice the productions of Joshua Iz. Leaning heavily on the synthetic side of house as well as dub, his apparent reluctance to hog the limelight is the only reason I can think of for his relative lack of eminence. "The Figure" is a typically discreet release from someone who actually debuted on the seminal Prescription Underground. Typically understated, there are nods in the direction of both Chicago and San Francisco. Its synths collide with workmanlike percussion resulting in a jack track of cosmic breadth. "What U Like" takes things deeper, the warm analogue keys layered on top of a sub-aquatic, fragmented diva. Again, the drum drives the point home. It's possible that Iz has ploughed the same furrow as usual a little too studiously here, but if it ain't broke...
