Trevino - Backtracking

  • Marcus Intalex's second 12-inch as Trevino also happens to be the second record for The Nothing Special, Craig Richards' new label. As he showed with Derelict, on [NakedLunch], the Englishman seems just as comfy at 4/4 as with his usual drum & bass. (Chicago house was his first love, apparently.) Backtracking follows a similar format, offering a rough tune on the A-side, and a friendlier groove on the flip. "Backtracking" reaches for a comparable bass timbre to Instra:mental's "Pyramid," but strings the fat notes out into something more constant and less hooky. Given this grimy underside, the overall mood is surprisingly tender. The sense of contrast is superb, with quasi-symphonic strings and sparse piano chords playing the bassline's emotional opposites. On the other side, "Juan Two Five" channels a similar vibe to Alex Cortex's "Beach Bass." It's far more interested in bass-heavy groove than melodic cleverness, however, sweeping listeners along via sea-breeze synths, which gust and swell with a feeling of absolute freshness. Though neither track is particularly elaborate, their sound is not a common one either. Another tick for The Nothing Special.
