Meschi - Light Wave Theory

  • Meschi is Paul Mitchell, a London-based producer who debuted last year on Lunar Disko Records. Light Wave Theory sees him jump to a newish Swiss imprint, Lux Rec, for his second release. Despite this shift, his material once again involves a good measure of bright, peppy synth work. Fans of Automatic Tasty—another Lunar Disko artist—may find something to love here, albeit in darker form. The first cut, "Origins," sounds like a cleaner take on Legowelt's more jacking work. Big, jellied bass sits at its centre, jiggling merrily about. Equally whimsical cowbells and a spooky, Theremin-like noise dawdle across the surface. "Cosmos" has less room for cheer, or merry flab. The sharpest of percussion forms its skeletal frame, with grim organ notes creeping about near the bottom of the spectrum. In the second half, Mitchell relieves the gloom somewhat, introducing a company of cheery synth pings. "Theory" splits the difference between these two moods. Via its grumbling bass and Goa-like synths, it feels initially determined, but later spectral chords enter the fray to rough things up.
