Alejandro Mosso - Pleamar

  • The sticker on the A-side of Alejandro Mosso's latest 12-inch for his eponymous label depicts a grand, painstakingly detailed bird flying out of the foliage, its head breaching the boundaries of the medium's circumference. We encounter plenty of artwork that sums up the vibe of a release, but few hit the nail on the head quite as well as this little picture does: graceful, slightly fantastical and lighter than air, Mosso's two trippers are sure to provide much-needed uplift at the sort of afterparty where much of the crowd has similarly found their heads snipped off. While "Pleamar" and "Bajamar" wouldn't necessarily sound out of place amidst your run-of-the-mill Latin-tinged tech house, their sensitivity might catch you by surprise. Once hand-drums and syncopated bass notes set the groove on "Pleamar," Mosso's leftfield melodies start coming through in waves, knocking the formula ever so slightly off balance until mournful keys return the balance. Beat-wise, "Bajamar" picks up right where the A-side leaves off, but its meandering melody (recalling a younger, hungrier Luciano) stretches itself wider and wilder. Still, the release finds Mosso contemplating deeper thoughts than his Lomidhigh Organic releases did, and his knack for interweaving ethereal moments make his sumptuous sound an increasingly enviable one.
