Mutiny - Deep Blu

  • A decade-and-a-half of music making has gone into Deep Blu—listen closely and you can hear it at every turn. Mutiny's Rob Davy and Dylan Barnes try nothing fancy, there's no need to flash their ankles and look winsome. Instead, they settle into a hypnotic groove early on and squat in it for over ten minutes. A 909 squiggle is its leitmotif, joined in turn by a god-fearing bassline wobble and pistol-crack snares that stomp through it like conscripts at the Pyongyang May Day Parade. In the hands of Mat Playford, the acidity has some of its edge taken off of it by the Space resident's trippy, searing, Balearic synth solos. Accompanied by King Tubby-style dub rimshots and the type of straight-up, four-to-the-floor approach that the original eschews, it is turned into something a tad more digestible for larger rooms.
