Loco Dice - Toxic EP

  • It's proved a pretty monumental year for Loco Dice. Not only has he endeared himself to the underground via another Under 300 tour, but he's also proved a reliable lynchpin of Sven Vath's massive Cocoon parties at Amnesia. To top that all off, he's also spent the past month or so cavorting with Richie Hawtin through North America as part of the CNTRL: Beyond EDM tour. The flipside to such a relentless touring schedule is a starkly sparse production outlay, with last summer's "Knibble Never Comes Alone" his last contribution of note. Fans of his rugged tech house sound are thus sure to be appeased courtesy of the Toxic EP, a release that leans strongly toward vintage Loco Dice planes. Opening number "Autoxox" for instance, is characertised by its rollicking, bouncing bass, one that combines with a sporadic vocal and a horde of piano stabs to ensure a frantic, atmosphere-laden culmination. The package's choice cut, though, is "Detox." It makes smart use of a range of analogue-inspired basslines and a sax lick that ensures it's poised for the floor. "Neurotox" is a more explicitly techno track, and it proves a refreshing distraction. Gentle guitar licks, subtle synths and random clicks then see Dice return to his minimal ethos of old on "Retox," the type of stripped-back effort encountered less often in recent times. While Dice hasn't quite rolled a double six here, Toxic nonetheless offers conclusive proof that he's lost none of his zest during his production hiatus either.
