Galtier - Ring Twice

  • Car Crash Set are self-proclaimed "Future Bass Specialists" from Seattle whose goal seems to have as many artists and remixes on their label as possible. (The list on their website is dizzying.) Somewhere in that catalogue are names like Distal, Artifact and Jam City. There are also plenty of under-the-radar talents like Galtier, who are taking advantage of CCS' big-tent A&Ring policy. Ring Twice is the Australian producer's debut, and it sounds like one. Of the two tracks here, one sounds heavily indebted to his inspirations (50 Weapons, Twin Turbo, Hessle Audio) while the other hints at his potential to take those influences further. "Ring Further" is the straight ahead raw techno number. It kicks with a contemporary bit of syncopation, but ultimately only showcases that Galtier has studied his heroes well. It wouldn't quite make the grade on Turbo sub-label Twin Turbo, for instance, lacking that special something like the unruly acid line of Harvard Bass' "Chalk" or the choral introduction to John Roman's "St Hood." B-side "Shaped" gets it right: A strange whirring occurs throughout, undercutting the polite chords and swung rhythm. If he can put the power of A and the inventiveness of B together, Galtier will be one to watch.
