Kevin Griffiths - Twenty Mids EP

  • Kevin Griffiths' Tsuba label has finely balanced a steady stream of releases with strict quality control since 2006. Griffiths' multi-tasking, however, has meant you have to go back two years to his previous EP on the label. Nonetheless, with Twenty Mids, he's shown that any paucity of output isn't reflected in the standard of the music when it finally arrives. The three original tracks on show here are noticeably more laconic, inhabiting the mid-teen BPMs rather than the low 120s, but while they're pitched distinctly towards the warm-up, there's no loss in momentum or focus. "Twenty Mids"' slowly-enveloping warmth comes from percussive strata underpinned by a classic bassline, its glock-like synth revolving insistently, letting the vox slide into the gap between. "Acid Splash," similarly making use of a flash of bongos to colour the mix, starts with a lumbering bassline, eponymous squelchy stabs, entwined with lofty pads and swirling high notes, its pitch serving to emphasise the groove, rather than suffocate it. "Los Pollos Hermanos"' echoing, filtered hats, delayed chords and vox closes out the trio with a mesmeric, woozy melody. "Acid Splash" encounters remix work from Leon Vynehall, turning it from early set fodder to a peak-time Detriot-esque houser. The acid notes take centre stage next to slippery low-end excursions, layered piano, handclaps and bright hats.
