Youandewan - Disarray
With his first release in more than a year, Ewan Smith returns via Hypercolour's sub-label, HypeLTD. The Leeds youngster has been a resident for the label's international parties these past 18 months, and he here delivers four house tracks at the very deepest end of the spectrum. Marking the EP's highpoint with a contrast of textures, the title track floats elongated tones and honeyed vocal snips over raw-edged analogue riffs to good effect. Cut from the same silky cloth, yet slightly more US garage-centric, "Awn" ambles along at the same pace, although its sugary female vox feels slightly contrived. "Undrstnd" suspends feather-light hats over a deep, skipping bassline, before the equally understated "0500" offers more of the same via a shuffling kick-clap combination, light pulses and more female coos.
