Brothers In Progress feat. Mr. High - Gamblee

  • While the likes of Apollonia, Rue de Plaissance and My Love is Underground grab plaudits for the recent French house resurgence, there are a handful of lesser-known imprints, like Time Has Changed, doggedly plugging away out of the limelight. Exactly 24 months since their debut release, head honchos Acumen and Timid Boy enlist the services of Neapolitan duo Brothers in Progress for their latest venture, joined by fellow Italian Mr. High, with Todd Bodine and the Colombian pairing of Figueroa & Obando on remix duty. "Gamblee" sets a sprightly initial stride. It lays upbeat, deeply percussive foundations beneath a pushy, rumbling bassline. Shimmering synths flit teasingly in and out of view, while a rather banal guitar riff eventually provides something solid to grab hold of. Todd Bodine does well to strip the original of its excess baggage, tightening the track's frame and adding in the deftest, most alluring of synth licks. This makes his remix an instant winner. Figueroa & Obando pull their weight too, though, holding back on the percussive clutter in favour of a simpler groove.
