Stephen Brown - Tangent

  • Generations collide on this all-Scottish affair, as new Glasgow imprint Animal Farm host seasoned Edinburgh techno purveyor Stephen Brown. The newly formed label arm of the Sub Club party of the same name started up in February with a dogged, main-room release from Swedish producer Bleak. On "Tangent" Brown explores less club-centric territory. He veers from the 4/4 template, with dense, slowly pulsating pads hovering above a tight body of drums, clicks and claps. Delicate notes add a luminescent, tender tinge to this beautiful slice of techno. On remix duty, Markus Suckut attempts a more dance floor-friendly version, though by simply slotting regular kicks beneath stripped-back elements of the original, he achieves the opposite. On "Reflective Practice," Brown steers the release back on course, this time draping a veil of emotive intensity over a fusion of cantering kicks and quirky synths. It gives the EP about as jolly a climax as his brand of techno permits.
