Carl Finlow - Boot Loop

  • It feels like Carl Finlow has always been around—and unless you discovered electronic music prior to 1986, he literally has. Co-founding 2020 Vision with Ralph Lawson in the mid-'90s, he's since operated under numerous guises, hitting his peak in the early '00s during his time as Silicon Sally. Reinforcing the proverb about elderly dogs and their repertoire, Finlow bypasses contemporary trends and delivers two typically guttural cuts for Billy Nasty's recently re-launched Electrix. "Conduit" is a strapping slab of electro-breaks that presses hard but maintains a sense of funk. "Hashtag" is closer to the Liverpudlian's more introspective output at the turn of the century. After a five-year hiatus, Justin Maxwell and Jean-Paul Bondy reform as Volsoc to deliver a dour interpretation of "Conduit," but it's a gloriously deranged rework of "Hastag" by Finlow's old sparring partner Keith Tenniswood that's the overall pick.
