The Sonic Aesthetic - New District

  • Mark Barrott recently uprooted his International Feel imprint from Punta del Este in Uruguay to the hills of Northern Ibiza. He here delivers his second release as The Sonic Aesthetic, through a new offshoot label of the same name. Reportedly inspired by his new Balearic surroundings, Steve Reich's minimalism and the recent output of L.I.E.S, the three tracks on New Districts were apparently produced according to Allen Ginsberg's theory of "first thought/best thought." In order to aid an improvised recording technique, Barrott reconfigured his studio with numerous shortcuts to quickly capture fresh ideas. Following March's Tales From The Nocture EP, a spacious, low-slung disco vibe is once again the common thread. "Duke's Cut" contrasts drowsy house chords and a bumping ripple of acid, with Barrott's penchant for sunshine psychedelia holding the parts together nicely. "Earthworms" is much the same, yet with less depth, making for a slightly less absorbing alternative. The balmy title track is more cinematic, combing a tranquil hum of field recordings and a mellow arpeggio. All in all, a versatile and season-fit package that's hopefully a sign of what's to come from Barrott and the label.
