Radio Slave - Tantakatan Remixes

  • Though its main purpose is to present two new mixes of Radio Slave's hit club tool from 2008, the recent re-release of Tantakatan also serves as a reminder that the Rekids co-founder shouldn't be forgotten amid all the brouhaha surrounding Nina Kraviz. Creeping in the shadows, Mr G's Nightwatch Dub is darkly-lit house in which the former Advent man adds in another step to the original's 4/4 beat, ratcheting up the tempo to give it an elastic bounce. Prins Thomas's "Diskomiks" has a restrained elegance, kicked off by lazy, live drums that settle into a kind of demi-march, with shuddering keyboard stabs, snatches of grand piano and tinkling Rhodes for good measure. As the stabs get more frantic, the squelchy bass is given even more prominence before each element fades away to nothing. Alongside the new tracks, Radio Slave's original mix and its remixes are given another airing. Rene Pawlowitz's riotous "Drunken Shed" mix has more than a touch of UK hardcore about it; Boola's rework is dubby and muddy of bass; and Radio Slave's alternate take throws in wild party noises, but it's the robotic assault of the original that shouts loudest. Headlined by compressed, pistol-crack drums and synth stabs heavy on the reverb, it's proudly got some balls.
