Contakt - Nobody Else

  • Dub techno isn't often a party-starter. But don't tell that to Contakt, one of the founders of Brooklyn's famously sweaty Turrbotax® nights. After releases for Dutty Artz and Local Action, the Michigan native returns with an EP for San Francisco's Icee Hot label. On paper, it's a dub techno record, with all the murky minor-key chords and focus on atmosphere that entails. In practice, it's something else entirely. Anyone who's been to Turrbotax® will be aware of the party's fondness for fog machines, and Contakt's music evokes the thickness of the air there. "Nobody Else" is meticulously constructed, but listen carefully and you'll hear nuggets of painstaking detail occasionally pushing through the hefty pulse. The dub influence is especially apparent on "Tessera 04," where expansive washes of windswept sound float over neatly interwoven drums. Finding room in the mix for some Moodymann-style flourishes, Ghosts On Tape clears the air and lightens the mood with his uncluttered and thoroughly unpretentious "Nobody Else" remix. Robert Hood's masterful take on "Tessera 04" also streamlines Contakt's sound, but only to make room for a powerful kick drum that grows more menacing by the bar.
