Mark E – Crossing Paths / R-type
On Crossing Paths / R-type, Mark E's journey away from disco-tinged house gathers pace toward what seems to be its natural conclusion: melodic, rolling techno. This is particularly true in the case of "Crossing Paths." The track kicks off with pinging kicks and a tumbling Octave One-style arp riff—sounding like some digital steel band—eventually settling down to a pummeling hi-hat rhythm. "R-Type" is a more glowering presence by comparison. It unfurls across nine minutes, with a juddering digital drone and choppy rotor blade synths that are eventually joined by something akin to a rockabilly bassline and a ghostly analogue phrase. It's rather odd, but all the more compelling for it.
