youngTEE - Get Deeper

  • Having gained a reputation for cheeky Rihanna and Whitney bootlegs, last year youngTEE expanded his portfolio into original productions with a release on Andy Blake's In Plain Sight. "Dr Chocolate" was a seriously fun piece of sample-heavy house. A year on, the south Londoner unveils his most ambitious release yet. Boldly using Roland Clark's "I Get Deep" vocal (as Fatboy Slim did for both "Song For Shelter" and "Star 69"), "Get Deeper" fashions a somewhat melancholy, analogue house groove with a liberal dusting of arps. "How Did I Get Here" splices jabbering '90s deep house keys with breakbeats and an academic delivering a lecture about the brain. "Lewisham '92" is raw, old-school, cowbell-laced house with acidic bass and spacey swells, and it stops short of out-and-out pastiche. "Can't Stop" dives into '80s electro funk complete with Defender-style laser cannons. Unlike the rest of the EP, it runs out of ideas towards the end of its seven minutes.
